Two people are dead following a collision between a pickup truck and a transport on Highway 17, shortly past noon on Feb. 2.

Martin and Maria Deon of Greater Sudbury, both 86, died after the pickup truck they were in struck a transport.

They were travelling eastbound in the truck when they came around a bend and crossed into the westbound lane.

A driver of a vehicle in the westbound lane was able to swerve out of the way and avoid a collision, but the pickup truck the Deons were travelling in continued in the wrong lane, and hit a transport.

The driver of the transport, a 50-year-old Ottawa woman, was not injured.

The accident closed the highway between Fairbank Lake Road and Nairn Centre for about five hours. The highway is now re-opened to traffic, but will be closed between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Feb. 3 as the transport is pulled from the ditch.

The Ontario Provincial Police state in a news release that weather and road conditions do not appear to be a factor in the accident, and that charges are not pending.
