Damage from a Tuesday morning fire at Northeastern Elementary School is estimated at $1,500, says Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

The damage is limited to insulation around a pipe in the boiler room, which caught fire because of heat from the boiler. Smoke from the fire got into the school?s ventilation system, forcing 720 students to evacuate to the Garson Arena as a precaution.

Classes were cancelled Tuesday, but students were back in school Wednesday morning.

?If the fire and ventilation practices aren?t done quickly, it could be quite hazardous, fatal even,? says platoon chief Tony Thibeault.

?The school?s emergency procedures worked very well. Everybody got out quickly, and nobody succumbed to the smoke. There was no panic, so all their practicing paid off.?

Approximately 12 firefighters extinguished the insulation with a dry chemical and a hose line. The fire department also brought in fans to clear the smoke out of the main office and the gym.
