Homes evacuated after vehicle strikes gas line

A call for police assistance on Old Falconbridge Rd.

A call for police assistance on Old Falconbridge Rd. was made this morning at 3:30 am and resulted in the following agencies being required to attend: Union Gas, Hydro One, Greater Sudbury Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services and the Greater Sudbury Police Service.  The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted and is also involved in the investigation.

Evidence obtained at this point would indicate that a van collided with a parked pick-up truck which in turn struck a residence and the natural gas line causing a complete break.

Flames were then observed coming from the house that was struck.  There was no one inside the home at the time.

An individual located at the scene was removed for his safety; approximately 20 area homes were evacuated for a period of about 30 minutes.

Daniel Mercier, 39, has been arrested and faces charges for lack of care and control, refusing to provide a breath sample and breach of probation.
