Update - Highway 69 South reopened Friday night at 10 pm.
Two people lost their lives as a result of a collision involving three tractor-trailers on Highway 69, two kilometers north of the Killarney turnoff, at 3:30 am Wednesday morning.
The preliminary investigation revealed a southbound fuel tanker truck was passing another southbound tractor-trailer in the passing lane, when a northbound tractor-trailer crossed the centre line into the path of the two transports. The driver of the tanker truck, who was passing, took evasive action to the opposite lane to avoid the collision. The northbound transport continued and side-swiped the second southbound transport, coming to rest in the northbound lane where it caught fire and remained burning for an extended period of time. The second transport came to rest in the ditch.
The driver of the southbound tanker truck escaped without injuries. Investigators confirmed two occupants of the northbound transport had died at the scene. Names are being withheld at this time, pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the second southbound transport was taken to St. Joseph's Health Centre with minor injuries.
The highway remained closed well into the evening allowing for further investigation and clean-up of the debris.
