Impaired charges laid after Hwy. 17 crash kills American senior

Impaired driving charges have been laid following a head-on collision on Highway 17 in the Nairn Centre area May 5 that killed an American senior.

Emergency services, including the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services and the Nairn-Hyman Fire Department, responded to the collision in Nairn-Hyman township shortly after 2 p.m. 

An eastbound vehicle collided head-on with a westbound vehicle.

A 73-year-old from the American state of Wisconsin was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two other individuals were transported to a local hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, a 32-year-old Warren resident was charged with: 

  • Dangerous operation causing death
  • Dangerous operation causing bodily harm
  • Operation while impaired causing death
  • Operation while impaired causing bodily harm

The accused was held in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Sudbury Bail Court May 6. 

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team.
