Frood Road was closed last night, Feb. 23, for about three hours after a 53-year-old Manitoulin Island man lost control of his vehicle and knocked down a hydro pole.

The road was closed from about 9 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., Feb. 24.

The man was travelling south on Frood Road around 8:40 p.m. and lost control of his pickup truck when he attempted to turn onto Lansdowne Street. He struck and sheared off the hydro pole, then attempted to back up to flee the scene.

He then struck an unoccupied, parked car, doing damage to the front of the vehicle.

The driver backed away from the damaged car and fled the scene, but was caught nearby by Greater Sudbury Police, explained a news release.

The driver was taken to police headquarters where a blood alcohol test was administered. According to the test, the driver had almost three times the legal amount of alcohol in his blood.

As a result, the man has been charged with impaired driving, blowing over 80, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
