A 52-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges after travelling down the wrong side of the road, almost smashing into a Greater Sudbury Police cruiser.

The police officer was heading eastbound on Van Horne Street at 8:10 p.m. Monday night, when another vehicle travelling on Shaughnessy Street turned right onto Van Horne, heading westbound. The vehicle crossed the centre line, travelling on the wrong side of the road towards the cruiser.

The officer was forced to swerve and brake heavily to avoid a collision. The cruiser did a U-turn and stopped the suspect's vehicle a short distance away.

The driver displayed signs of being impaired. He was brought to police headquarters, where he produced breath samples that were twice the legal limit.

The suspect, who comes from outside the province, was charged with impaired driving, blowing over 80 and dangerous driving. He was held pending an Aug. 16 bail hearing.
