A teenager from Lively was killed Sunday after being involved in a snow machine accident.

Greater Sudbury Police and EMS were called to the scene of a snowmobile collision on Lake Penage in the area of Crane Point.

Kurt Kaitila, 17, from 73 Westview Cres. Lively, attended Grade 12 at Lively Secondary School. He is survived by his parents, Keven and Barbara Kaitila, and his sister Bryanna. His grandparents are Dr. Keijo and Tuula Kaitila, and Elwin and Doris McLaren.

The accident happened overnight Saturday night as Kaitala was returning to his family's camp at Sand channel on Lake Penage.

Kaitala was riding alone on his snowmobile when he hit a rock cut.

Police say they believe alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident. Officers from the traffic management unit are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Grief counsellors were brought into Lively Secondary on Monday to assist students trying to cope with the tragedy.

Anyone who might have some information about this incident are asked to contact police at 675-9171, ext. 2208.

A private family service will be held Thursday for the teenager. A memorial bursary has been established in his name.
