A 33-year-old man was charged with two counts of mischief to property, two counts of assaulting police and possession of a dangerous weapon after he allegedly tried to set fire to a Ste. Anne's Road apartment building and then barricaded himself in a elevator with a sword.

When police arrived, they found that the man had caused damage to an apartment. They later learned that the man had barricaded himself in an elevator with a large sword, and was causing damage to elevator.

After two-and-a-half hours of negotiating with the man, police took him into custody without incident, and brought him to the hospital for a medical checkup.

Upon release from the hospital, the man will be lodged at police headquarters pending a bail hearing. The investigation is continuing, but no additional charges are anticipated at this time.
