Many charges laid over the long weekend

Officers of the Traffic Management Unit and Rural Squad were out over the long weekend conducting enforcement and patrol throughout the City of Greater Sudbury.

Officers of the Traffic Management Unit and Rural Squad were out over the long weekend conducting enforcement and patrol throughout the City of Greater Sudbury.  Spot Checks were conducted on Friday evening resulting in eight highway traffic act charges being laid and one person receiving a 12 hour suspension of their licence.  Three people were charged with Impaired driving over the weekend by uniform officers.  The following are the results of the weekend enforcement, as stated in a news release:

Highway Traffic Act:
*94 people were charged with speeding (one driver charged twice in 10 minutes)
*11 people were charged with failing to wear their seatbelt
*4 novice drivers were charged with contravening conditions of their licence.
*20 other highway traffic act charges were laid
*6 people were charged with failing to pull to the left for emergency vehicles
*2 vehicles were pulled off the road for being unfit and the drivers were charged
*1 driver was charged with personation and obstruct by a uniform officer after he attempted to identify himself as his brother.  He was charged with several HTA offences as well as drive under suspension and doing 101 km/h in a posted 50 km/h residential area including a park.
OFF Road Vehicle Act:
*12 people were charged with operating an ATV on a highway in the Valley area
*2 parents were charged with permitting their children to operate an ATV on a highway.

Officers of the Rural Squad working plain cloths patrolled the outlying areas and assisted with uniform calls throughout the outlying areas.  The following is the result of those directed patrols:
*4 youths were charged with underage drinking in Hanmer on Friday evening.
*Officers patrolled Chelmsford, Dowling, Levack, Valley East, Capreol and Lively on Saturday night resulting in no charges being laid in those areas.
*On Sunday May 20th officers patrolled Hanmer, Chelmsford, Dowling and Levack again without incident.
*Officers attended a loud party on Woodbine Avenue in New Sudbury.  Information revealed that the parents were gone to camp for the weekend.  The party was shut down and approximately 30 people were sent on their way.  Nine underage party goers were charged with underage drinking and their parents were notified.

Members of the Traffic Branch and Rural Squad will continue to conduct enforcement over the summer targeting complaint areas throughout the City and Outlying areas.
