(CNW) North Shore Steel Products Ltd., a Sault Ste. Marie-based company that operates a wheel manufacturing plant in Sudbury, has been fined $50,000  for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that resulted in serious injuries to an employee.

On June 5, 2004, a worker was helping to dismantle a spring-loaded overhead garage door when the spring began to unwind and struck the worker’s arm. The worker suffered a fracture to the right arm and lacerations to the right elbow.

North Shore pleaded guilty to failing to provide information, instruction and supervision to workers on how to safely dismantle the overhead garage door. The company was fined $35,000. The company was also fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to interfering with evidence.

A company supervisor pleaded guilty to failing to take the reasonable precaution of providing written instructions to workers. He was fined $7,500.
