Officer assaulted during traffic stop

While investigating a routine traffic stop Oct. 15 on Lasalle Blvd. at 2:20 pm, a Greater Sudbury police officer was punched in the face by a passenger in the vehicle.

While investigating a routine traffic stop Oct. 15 on Lasalle Blvd. at 2:20 pm, a Greater Sudbury police officer was punched in the face by a passenger in the vehicle.

According to the police, while the officer was investigating the vehicle, the passenger allegedly launched an unprovoked attack. The officer was hit in the face and a scuffle ensued before the passenger fled the scene on foot.

Thanks to the Ontario Provincial Police and the K-9 unit, the suspect, who is 17, was eventually apprehended and has been charged with assaulting a police officer, two counts of possession of an illegal narcotic, resisting arrest, breach of probation and breach of a conditional sentence order.

The driver of the vehicle, 18, who was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for theft under $5,000, was also arrested and charged with obstructing justice and a number of Highway Traffic Act offences.
