OPP search for suspects who forcibly broke into Killarney Provincial Park

Police are in the process of investigating another incident of mischief at Killarney Provincial Park, after a gate to access the property had its hardware removed before being taken down. 

Officers of the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Ontario Provincial Police received notice of the mischief sometime in the afternoon of April 27 and upon further investigation, determined the crime had taken place between 9 a.m. on April 26 and 5:15 p.m. on April 27. 

This incident and a similar event on April 14, took place on Chikanishing Creek Road, off of Highway 637, which provides access to the park’s Chikanishing Trail. In both instances, Police said there was signage posted at all access points to indicate that the park was closed. 

Residents are reminded that as per the emergency order, all Ontario Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves are closed to the public until further notice. Those who are non-compliant may be charged with the following: 

  • Fail to comply with an order made during a declared emergency, contrary to section 7.0.11 (1)(a) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA) and face a fine of $750 and or,
  • Unlawful use land, contrary to section 13(2) of the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (PPCRA), with a fine of $155 and or, 
  • Enter premises when entry prohibited, contrary to section 2(1)(a)(i) of the Trespass to Property Act (TPA) and a fine of $65
