Plane crashes in McKerrow, pilot injured

The pilot has been identified as Chitranshu Kalra, 25, of New Delhi, India, according to an OPP news release. He was temporarily residing in Guelph.

Prior to his departure, he calculated having three hours and 36 minutes of flying time, but after two hours in the air, the pilot noticed his fuel gauge was reading empty. At this time, he called in a distress call and looked for a place to land. As he set the plane down in the field, the front wheel caught in the snow and the plane flipped on its roof .

The pilot crawled out of the window and was assisted by the owner of the property. He was treated for minor back injuries and released from the Espanola General Hospital.

The investigation is continuing. 

Members of the Espanola detachment of the OPP are investigating a plane crash in McKerrow.

The plane left Guelph en route to Elliott Lake when it crashed behind a farmhouse on Vanalstine Rd. in McKerrow. The pilot, who was the lone occupant, was taken to Espanola Hospital and suffered minor injuries, stated an OPP news release. Nobody else was injured in the crash.

Transport Canada will be assisting in the ongoing investigation. Further details will be released as they become available.
