The Greater Sudbury Police Service has recently been made aware of a number of telephone and computer-generated scams targeting local citizens. Two of the active scams are described below.

The first scam involves citizens receiving calls advising them that the extended warranty for their vehicle is close to expiring. The caller or solicitor then offers an upgrade to the warranty, some indicating coverage of up to 200,000 kilometres.

Some solicitors are aggressive in their demeanor and have been known to be rude, a police release stated. They will eventually ask for credit card information for payment purposes.

These calls are not being made by the car dealerships, police advised. Do not provide the caller with any personal information and advise them you will be calling your local dealer if, in fact, your warranty is nearing its expiry date.

The second scam involves an Internet ad offering employment to someone who preferred working from home. In order to start up the business, the victim received a money order from the “company.”

The victim was directed to exchange the money order for cash, take a portion of the money for starting up the business and then forward the difference back to the sender. It was later confirmed that the money order was a counterfeit, though it appeared legitimate.

The public is advised that whether receiving money in the form of a cheque, money order or other type of currency, do not get caught up in a deal where the money must be returned to the sender – no legitimate company does this.
