A 50-year-old man has been arrested for impersonating a police officer in several incidents, said Greater Sudbury Police.

GSPS spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said in a news release today that a number of residents told police in recent weeks they were stopped by a man driving a replica police vehicle with flashing lights activated. The most recent incident reported to media occurred on April 8 when a woman was pulled over on Highway 17 by a vehicle that seemed to be a police cruiser.

On April 12, Greater Sudbury Police executed a search warrant at a home on David Street after identifying the man they believe is responsible.

Officers located and seized two Dodge Charger vehicles believed to be used in the commission of the offences.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer. He appeared in bail court on April 13 to answer to the charges.

The investigation into these incidents is ongoing, and GSPS encourages anyone who believes that they were stopped by a man operating a similar-type vehicle without proper Police identification to contact our Traffic Management Unit at 705-675-9171 ext. 2421.

“Our officers will have identifiable Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) attire including shoulder flashes and use-of-force equipment,” said GSPS in a news release. “A plainclothes officer (not in uniform) will have a badge that is readily available on their belt around their waist or on a chain around their neck. We remind community members that if you are ever concerned or unsure, you have the right to ask for police identification.”
