Police confirm fatality in Hwy. 69 crash

One person was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a full-sized van on Hwy. 69 S Nov. 21 around 7 am. William Hooey, 26, from Echo Bay, was killed when his van crossed the centre-line and smashed head-on into the tractor trailer.

One person was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a full-sized van on Hwy. 69 S Nov. 21 around 7 am.

William Hooey, 26, from Echo Bay, was killed when his van crossed the centre-line and smashed head-on into the tractor trailer.  Hooey was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a man from southern Ontario was taken to St. Joseph's Health Centre in Sudbury with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

A technical traffic collision investigator and a collision reconstructionist with the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating. The French River Fire Department was also at the scene to put out the van, which burst into flames on impact. As a result of a diesel spill the Ministry of the Environment was notified and attended the scene.

The highway was closed for approximately eight hours while police investigated and cleaned up the road.
