This type of behaviour has often been defined as a crime of opportunity as many of the individuals involved will canvass an area for vehicles left unlocked and will remove items that they can either use themselves or that they know they can sell.

Stolen items range from loose change to CD’s, wallets, purses, laptop computers, tools, stereos and satellite radios.

Some of the vehicles were literally broken into, where damage was done in order to access the interior; though the majority of the thefts involve vehicles left unlocked.

There have been incidents reported from all areas and neighbourhoods of the Greater City of Sudbury – no one is immune.

Keeping your vehicle locked at all times, even when parked in your own driveway, is the first step to help decrease the number of incidents.

Other preventative tips:

* do not leave anything of value inside the vehicle, especially in plain view
* if items, such as tools, must be left in the vehicle, engrave or mark them in order to facilitate the return if / when they are located
* when possible, park your vehicle in a well lit area
* consider installing motion lights which would activate when someone approaches your vehicle – this is also a personal safety tip
* report suspicious activities to police.
