A 69-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a Canadian Pacific freight train at the Main St. crossing in Chelmsford Jan. 26 around 5 pm.

She has been  identified by police as Rita Tremblay.

Police say the woman was walking along the southern edge of Main St. approaching the railway crossing when she was hit. Emergency response teams attended the scene but were unable to revive the victim before she succumbed to her injuries.

After speaking with family, friends, and witnesses, police say the event was caused by a series of unfortunate circumstances. It is believed that Tremblay did not hear the train due to a hearing loss and did not see the train until it was too late.

The lights at the crossing were functioning properly, and several cars were stopped.

A funeral service is being held Jan. 31 at St. Joseph's Church in Chelmsford at 11 am.
