Greater Sudbury Police killed a bear in the area of Felix Ricard Catholic Elementary School on Lasalle Boulevard Aug. 31 at around 7:45 p.m.

The bear had reportedly forced a pedestrian to run into traffic in the area to avoid it.

The animal was treed by responding officers, and they contacted the MNR to deal with it. However, it made several attempts to leave the tree before the MNR arrived.

“As a result of its aggressive nature, the bear was believed to be a threat to public safety, and was subsequently shot and killed by officers,” stated a news release from police.

Greater Sudbury Police also received two other complaints about bears during the evening of Aug. 31 - one in the area of College Boreal, and one on Meadowside.

One of the bears was checking out a dumpster, and another was “feasting on garbage on someone's front lawn.”

Both of these bears left before police arrived.

“Homeowners are urged to put their garbage out for collection the morning of pick up to reduce the likelihood of bears in their neighbourhood,” stated the news release.
