Greater Sudbury Police and the Ontario Provincial Police were called in to search for four teenagers who were reported missing during the late afternoon of Oct. 10 after they were late returning from a boating expedition on Lake Wahnipitae.

The boat and occupants were spotted by the OPP helicopter at around 6 p.m., and were escorted by rescue boats, who towed them to shore. All of the occupants were safe and well.

“Although this event had a happy ending, the Greater Sudbury Police Service wish to remind the public that at this time of year, the weather, water temperature and early onset of dusk make outdoor activities like boating dangerous,” stated a press release from the police.

“Always share your travel plans, timetable and route with someone. Ensure the mechanical fitness of the boat or vehicle you are using. Prepare by bringing proper signal and survival equipment with you. Thanksgiving and any other holiday time should be a safe time for everyone.”
