Officers from the Sudbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were kept busy the night of Jan. 2, responding to three motor vehicle collisions in the same area on Hwy. 69.

The first collision occurred around 8 pm in Cox Township near Crooked Lake Rd. when a family of four driving north from Moonstone Ontario in their SUV, struck a moose. Two occupants were taken to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury and treated for minor injuries. No charges were laid and alcohol was not involved.

Officers responded to their second single motor vehicle collision at 11 pm, this time just south of Crooked Lake Rd. A male driver from Oshawa Ontario was northbound and lost control on icy roads and struck a rock cut.  He was not injured, no charges were laid and alcohol was not involved.

At 11:50 pm, officers investigated another single motor vehicle collision in the same area, this time just north of Crooked Lake Rd. A male driver from Val Thérèse Ontario was also northbound when he lost control on icy roads and hit a rock cut. He was not injured, no charges were laid and alcohol was not involved.

Officers would like to remind motorists to watch the road, shoulder and ditches for wildlife. Secondly, although there isn't snow on the ground, we have been getting rain and temperatures fall below zero at night. Be careful when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses, as these sections of road freeze much sooner in cold weather and stay frozen long after the sun has risen. Watch out for “black” ice, areas of the road that appear black and shiny and where your vehicle can lose traction suddenly. Slow down, keep your foot off the brake and be ready to shift to neutral or step on the clutch as your vehicle crosses these areas.
