Greater Sudbury Police ask the public be extra vigilant when using the Internet and in particular to be aware of youth using chat rooms and instant messaging.

Over the last several days, person(s) unknown have accessed chat rooms reporting to be friends of area youth. The youth openly communicate private and confidential information through their internet provider.

Young people are then directed to specific sites where they are shown inappropriate sexual material and quite often their computer becomes infected with viruses, say police.

There are numerous websites that have information for parents about internet safety.

Any safety questions or concerns can be directed to the crime prevention unit of the Greater Sudbury Police Service by phoning 675-9171.
