No criminal charges will be filed by Greater Sudbury Police after allegations surfaced this week a friend of a city councillor was destroying an opponent's campaign signs.

Ward 9 candidate John Cochrane alleged someone working for candidate Doug Craig was being mischievious and called police.

It was alleged a man in Craig's car damaged a Cochrane campaign sign seconds after erecting a Craig campaign sign Tuesday morning.

Police confirmed Friday they have completed their investigation and no criminal charges will be filed against Craig or his friend.

Craig said Friday he feels vindicated.

"The police investigation has been completed and it's been concluded there were no grounds for the investigation to proceed on any of the allegations put forward by John Cochrane," said Craig.

"I think this was an attempt to distract me from my campaign and the important issues and I won't elaborate or comment further.

"I'm glad about how the way I handled this and that's about all I want to say."

Craig has been on Sudbury council for 12 years.

"I think it was a feeble attempt to try and tarnish my reputation somehow...I feel totally vindicated and I'm just going to move on from here and finish my campaign," he said.

Cochrane said he makes no apologies about reporting the incident.
