Controversial independent federal election candidate John David Popescu has been charged with two counts of wilful promotion of hatred following comments he made during the federal election last fall.

On Sept. 29, 2008, candidates from the federal election were invited to Sudbury Secondary School to address students about their election platforms.

Popescu was asked a question by one of the students about his view on same sex marriages. The candidate was quoted as saying "I believe that homosexuals should be executed."

Popescu then made similar comments to Helen Kennedy, director of Eagle Canada, on a radio show in Toronto Oct. 2, 2008. He was calling into the radio show from Sudbury at the time.

Greater Sudbury Police conducted an investigation, and the information was sent to the attorney general's office to see whether charges were warranted. The attorney general's office allowed the charges to go forward.

Popescu is due to appear in court April 15.
