The provincial government is investing $200,000 in the Greater Sudbury courthouse for the design of a new sallyport.

A sallyport is the space between two doors used to transfer prisoners in or out of the courthouse. The first door is opened and a prisoner would enter into a little room. once the first door is closed behind the prisoner, a second opens in front giving entrance to the courthouse.

The Sudbury investment is part of a $2.3 million plan by the government to improve courthouse security in six municipalities.

"The government takes very seriously court security and the safety of our staff and, of course, the public," said attourney general Michael Bryant in a news release. "Courthouses must be able to securely house accused or convicted persons brought to the courts daily by local police."
