Ron Roy, chairman of Action Sudbury, is reminding Greater Sudbury residents that his organization is celebrating their Red Ribbon campaign kickoff for the 2006/2007 festive season, Nov. 24.

One of Action Sudbury's many initiatives is the Red Ribbon Campaign. Action Sudbury distributes red ribbons to residents, businesses and organizations throughout the Sudbury area, during the Christmas season.

Action Sudbury is a non-profit community organization comprised of individuals and agencies with a common goal to eliminate the tragedies caused by impaired drivers in the Sudbury area. This volunteer group was formed in 1984 by the efforts of the late Peter Wong.

Bill and Linda Ryan who had just lost a child to an impaired driver, approached former Mayor Wong to see if the city could do anything regarding impaired driving in Sudbury. Wong, chair of Action Sudbury was involved with the initiation of the Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving (O.C.C.I.D.).

According to a press release, the Red Ribbon Campaign is a commitment by Canadians to drive safe and sober. It is a highly visible, community public awareness program which utilizes volunteer participation in promotion of the message that impaired driving deaths and injuries are needless tragedies and totally preventable.

The campaign launch is taking place Nov. 24 at the Travelodge Hotel on Paris St. at 10:30 am.
