Second-degree murder charge laid in West Nipissing shooting

A 48-year-old man from West Nipissing has been charged with second degree murder after a March 13 shooting death.

Shortly after 5 p.m. March 13, members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Bradley Street in West Nipissing.

The deceased has been identified as Joseph Genereux, 53, of West Nipissing.

As a result of the investigation, Marc Larabie, 48, also of West Nipissing, has been charged with second degree murder, unauthorized possession of a firearm and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Superior Court of Justice in North Bay on April 12.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to public safety.

The public can continue to expect a large police presence in the area. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

The investigation is being conducted by the Nipissing West OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
