The director of the Special Investigations Unit has determined a broken hand sustained by a 19-year-old woman arrested by Greater Sudbury Police in October 2017 was self-inflicted.
In the early morning hours of Oct. 28, police officers arrested the woman at the Downtown Sudbury Transit Terminal. She was taken to the police station and placed in a cell.
At approximately 2:50 a.m., the woman stood on the cement bed and punched the Plexiglas located above the cell doors with her right hand.
Upon release the next morning, she attended the hospital and was diagnosed with a fracture of the right hand.
“I have terminated the investigation into this incident as the injury the woman sustained was self-inflicted as is evident by a review of the cell video,” said SIU director Tony Loparco.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
