Speeding motorcyclist charged

While conducting radar patrol on Highway 69 in Burwash Township July 19 around 3:30 p.m., Sudbury OPP officers attempted to stop a southbound motorcycle caught speeding at 131 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.

While conducting radar patrol on Highway 69 in Burwash Township July 19 around 3:30 p.m., Sudbury OPP officers attempted to stop a southbound motorcycle caught speeding at 131 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.

The driver refused to stop for police while reaching speeds over 170 km/h.  In the distance, officers observed the suspect motorcycle turn onto Crooked Lake Road and the pursuit was terminated. 

As officers continued their attempts to locate the suspect on Crooked Lake Road, they noticed the motorcycle coming towards them without the intention of stopping.  It drove by both cruisers and proceeded northbound on Highway 69.

With the assistance of other motorists, officers were advised the suspect had turned onto Highway 637.  Officers located the suspect vehicle in Killarney and the driver was arrested.

"Public safety was taken into consideration throughout this investigation, resulting in no injuries," according to a release from the OPP.

A 53-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, race a motor vehicle and speeding.

The Bloomfield resident had his driver’s licence suspended and the motorcycle seized, for 7 days each.  He will appear in Sudbury Court on September 9.

"Officers would like to thank the public for the assistance provided by motorists travelling on Highways 69 and 637 along with the residents of Killarney who helped in the apprehension of the suspect," reads the release.
