For the fourth year, the Greater Sudbury Police Service and community partners Cambrian College  Laurentian University, Collège Boréal, the City of Greater Sudbury and YMCA Newcomer Services came together to host the Intercultural Ride-Along Program.

This year, 18 international students joined 18 participating officers on a ride-along as a way to foster cultural awareness, trust and relationship-building.

“Learning about different cultures and the relationships with the police in different countries provides us, as officers, with a better understanding of how we may be perceived by International Students and Newcomers to our community,” police said in a news release.

The opportunity not only fostered understanding of the role of police officers play in the community, it also provided students with the chance to learn more about justice and law enforcement in Canada.

“I found the Ride-Along Program to be a great initiative because I got to understand the difference between Ontario’s laws and Indian laws. As an International Student at Cambrian, I got to understand the perspective of the Officer and the important issues they deal with on a day-to-day basis,” Vidushi Sharma, an international student said.

Since its launch in 2014, 63 students, three newcomers and 69 officers have taken part in the Intercultural Ride-Along Program.
