To increase officer safety, the Greater Sudbury Police Service will start using blue lights on top of cruisers, along with "cherry tops" or red lights.

Peel Regional Police recently spearheaded a "Blue Light Initiative", which demonstrated using blue lights along with red lights on top of cruisers dramatically increases officer safety, said Greater Sudbury Police Chief Ian Davidson.

Research has shown police officers spend 10 times more driving time than the average citizen and officers are 49 percent more likely to be injured in a collision than at the hands of an assailant.

A combination of blue and red lights would clearly identify police cruisers, increase officer safety, reduce collisions, prevent injuries and save lives, said Davidson.

Numerous police services across the province have joined the Blue Light Initiative, he said.

There would be virtually no financial costs as the police service would purchase blue bulbs instead of red ones.
