A Sudbury man has been charged with sexual assault for an alleged incident that occurred in 1999.

In an April 29 news release, Greater Sudbury Police said the 57-year-old Sudbury man was arrested and charged April 8.

The case has some history. The incident occurred in 1999 and at the time the complainant, a 15-year-old youth was a ward of Children's Aid Services Sudbury and
Manitoulin where the individual involved in the incident was employed.

The complainant originally approached police in 2004, but at the time the person didn’t want to pursue criminal charges.

Then in January, 2023, the complainant told GSPS they were ready to proceed with charges and an investigation was launched by the GSPS Major Sex Crime Unit. There is no statute of limitation when it comes to reporting a sexual assault.

The investigation led to charges of sexual assault against the man. He was released on bail and will be in court on May 1 to answer to the charges.

Based on their investigation, GSPS are concerned there may be other survivors. If you have any information related to this incident or this individual.

None of these allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

Police also note there are various options for reporting a sexual assault “when you are ready to do so.”

“In the case of an emergency, if you are in danger or need medical assistance or if the incident just took place/the person responsible is nearby, GSPS recommends you call 9-1-1 immediately. If you are reporting a Sexual Assault after the fact and you do not believe that you require immediate assistance, you can call at (705) 675-9171 or you can report it online through the online reporting option on the GSPS website www.gsps.ca.
