Suspect arrested for theft from CPR train

Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) personnel in Cartier requested officers’ assistance after they observed two males removing merchandise from the stopped cargo train on Oct. 21 at 6:30 am.

A Sudbury OPP officer, who was already in the area, immediately attended and observed a southbound van on Hwy 144 at Cartier. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police and fled down a bush trail where the vehicle became incapacitated after striking several boulders. At this time, the driver fled on foot but was apprehended and arrested by the officer. The passenger could not be located. Officers recovered some of the stolen property inside the van.

On Oct. 26, local hunters turned-in four boxes containing merchandise which they located near the area, off Hwy 144, Cartier Twp. Canadian Pacific Police were notified and confirmed this property had also been stolen on Oct. 21.

Kurt Saile, 38, of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, QC is charged with possession of break-in instruments, possession of stolen property under $5,000, dangerous driving of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and flight from police.
