A 16-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed by his 15-year-old classmate at A.B. Ellis High School in Espanola at around 10:46 a.m. April 14.

The victim was transported to Espanola General Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening stab wounds to his right shoulder, and has since been released from hospital.

The suspect may be charged with up to five charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing a police officer, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.

The school went into Code Red Lockdown during the incident. All students were kept in their classrooms as police arrived on the scene.

Espanola Police, with the assistance of the OPP, recovered the suspect's knife, and arrested the suspect a short distance from the school.

The boy was taken to the Espanola Police Service building, and is currently being held for bail in Sudbury.

"The school is in no further danger," said Jean Hanson, director of education with the Rainbow District School Board.

"Any incident such as this leaves students with questions, but those will be answered in our debriefing process. This is serious because it happened at a school, but we are being vigilant. We were fortunate that the school was prepared, and we're proud of the way students and staff at the school responded to the situation."

Hanson also said that any students or staff with any concerns or post-traumatic stress will be looked after, and that the school has returned to its regular schedule.
