The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a three-vehicle crash that happened just before 7 am June 22 on Hwy. 17 E near Coniston Hydro Rd.

One man, who was sent to St. Joseph's Health Centre with serious injuries, is now listed in stable condition.

According to police, the incident occurred when a westbound Jetta pulled to the side of the road when it was unable to merge into traffic once the right lane ended. At the same time, a dark-coloured extended cab pickup truck who was behind the Jetta swerved in front of a Toyota car to get around the Jetta.

Swerving to avoid a collision with the pickup, the Toyota's rear-end crossed the centre-line and was struck by an eastbound tractor trailer hauling sand-blasting materials. The impact with the Toyota disabled the tractor trailer's steering, causing it to cross the centre-line and collide with a westbound commercial pickup truck. The driver of the commercial truck was the only person injured.

Police are looking for the dark-coloured extended cab pickup truck and its driver, who they suspect may be indirectly involved in the crash.

The Ministry of the Environment is on the scene attending to a diesel spill from the tractor trailer.

The OPP say the highway will be closed until late afternoon while officers continue their investigation and clean-up the scene. Motorists looking for a detour can try Hwy. 537 and Hwy. 69.
