Two dead after chase near Sturgeon Falls

A police chase stemming from an arrest made during a RIDE check on Highway 17, south of North Bay, has left two people dead.

At about 9 p.m. on Dec. 13, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 17, east of Highway 11 and south of North Bay.

A vehicle was pulled over and one of the two men inside arrested by police. The other, 23-year-old Ghislain Michel Joseph Gareau of Verner, fled the scene in the vehicle and was pursued by the OPP.

Just east of Sturgeon Falls, the driver of the vehicle collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by 20-year-old Angele Mary Penasse, from Sturgeon Falls.

The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the accident. The SIU is called in to determine whether police acted accordingly.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators from the SIU are examining the circumstances of the accident.
