You can't make this up: Man jumps from moving taxi, knifes bus driver, gets arrested

Arrest of 34-year-old follows late night attack on Ramsey Lake Road

Like a scene from a Hollywood action film, a Greater Sudbury transit bus driver was sent to hospital and treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed by a passenger wielding a knife on May 28.

Around 11:50 p.m. Sunday, police said the accused reportedly jumped out of a moving taxi cab on Ramsay Lake Road in Greater Sudbury, and took off at a run before boarding a city transit bus. The taxi driver immediately phoned 911 after the man jumped from the vehicle.

Once on the bus, the man, who sufferd scrapes to his legs jumping from the taxi, allegedly attacked the bus driver with a knife, causing a large gash to his forearm and another to his neck.

The driver fought back against the attacker, police said. Thankfully, GSPS officers were in the area at the time of the incident and arrived at the scene very shortly after the man had boarded the bus.

In fact, the driver was wrestling with the attacker, who still had the knife, when police boarded the bus.

Police dove into the fray and were able to subdue the attacker and, potentially, save the bus driver from further injury.

The driver was transported to hospital and treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The 34-year old man from Greater Sudbury has been charged with the following under the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order (x4)
  • Possession of a Schedule II Substance

The man is to appear in court this morning.
