Young boy helps rescue overturned canoers

Two men were rescued Saturday after their canoe overturned on Lake Laurentian. Around 11:30 a.m., the Greater Sudbury Police Service, EMS and the fire department were called to the lake, located on South Bay Road.

Two men were rescued Saturday after their canoe overturned on Lake Laurentian.

Around 11:30 a.m., the Greater Sudbury Police Service, EMS and the fire department were called to the lake, located on South Bay Road. One man had swum to shore while the two other remained in the water holding onto the canoe.

No safety equipment or personal flotation devices were in use. 

All of the individuals were successfully rescued and taken to the St. Joseph’s Health Centre for treatment of hypothermia.

A 15-year-old male member of the public was instrumental in assisting the rescue by entering the water and using his prior lifeguard training. 

The police are not currently releasing the names of the individuals involved in this incident.
