Greater Sudbury's Brianna Smith may be just 12 years old, but she has firmly established herself as a rising star in the world of martial arts.

Over the past few months, Smith has made her presence felt in all kinds of tournaments for her age group.

At a regional qualifying event in London in April, Smith won four gold medals in musical forms, musical weapons, weapons and Kung Fu soft form. She won a silver medal in points sparring and a bronze in continuous sparring.

At the recent Canadian championships, Smith won silver medals in Kung Fu soft form, points sparring and continuous fighting.

Add all the success up and Smith has made the Canadian national team and will represent the country at the 2008 World Karate Association world championship in Orlando, Florida in November.

While Smith may not be shy about going toe-to-toe with opponents, she is reserved when it comes to talking about her recent accomplishments.

Getting the chance to represent Canada, is considered a true honour by the youngster.

"It means all the hard work I put into my training does pay off," the Jeanne Sauve Public School student said. "I am happy to represent Canada and meet my friends from other provinces and countries."

In Germany in 2007, Smith placed fourth overall in her age group for weapons.

This time around, Smith has her sights set slightly higher. Smith will compete in three different events in Florida: Kung Fu soft-style, sparring and continuous sparring.

"I would like to, hopefully, win a medal," she said.

Smith is an under-belt and is working toward earning her black belt status.

The world of martial arts offers much more to Smith than just medals and earning a black belt.

"I enjoy the competitions, meeting athletes who can become good friends and also travelling," Smith said. "The sport has helped me to be more focused and have better concentration, and it keeps me in good physical condition."

Smith isn't just limited to the sport of martial arts. She does a great deal of training with Gord Apolloni at the Top Glove Boxing Academy. She said the training makes her a more well-rounded competitor.

Apolloni said he sees another driven athlete in Smith.

"Brianna is very talented," the coach said. "She trains with us for her hands, agility and movement. She has very good skills and improves everyday. She's willing to go through the paces to get where she wants to go."

Smith is also a member of the Sudbury Laurels Gymnastic Club and is a Level III gymnast, competing at the inter-club level. In four competitions, Smith earned a first-place finish and two second-place finishes.

Despite her relatively young age, Smith appears to be well aware of what it takes to have success in almost any sport and has some sound advice for others to heed.

"Get out and compete and never give up," she said.
