Without further delay, here's a salute to the efforts of our local high school athletes.

ESC Champlain has served up the competition in the volleyball scene recently.

Both the junior and seniors boys volleyball teams won the city championships and the Northern Ontario Secondary School's Athletics (NOSSA) 'A' titles earlier this month. Impressive results for an impressive school with only 370 students.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite school won the junior boy's Division II volleyball crown recently, and placed second at the NOSSA event.

The high school football league dished out their awards on Wednesday, and St. Charles College running back Aaron Rehel was the big winner.

Rehel, who enjoyed a terrific season with the Cardinals, walked away with the league's top prize, The Sid Forster Award, as league MVP. Rehel also won the Chris Bartolucci award as top offensive player. Rehel also made three appearances on the league's first all-star squad as top running back, punt returner and kick returner.

The Lockerby Vikings, who won the city crown, were also well represented at the awards banquet. Hard hitting Lockerby linebacker Jason Cecchini won the Gary Ricker Award as the league's top defensive player.

Congratulations to all the winners. The high school football scene is as vibrant as it has been in years, and the honest efforts put forth by all the players, coaches and supporters is finally being recognized.

The league also recognized the passionate efforts of three builders, long time coaches Chris Bartolucci, Gary Ricker and Father Frank Black, with special awards as well.

The Lasalle Lancers are in basketball heaven.

The Lasalle midget, junior and senior girls basketball teams all won their respective city Division I titles recently.

Good job ladies!

Meanwhile, St. Benedict won the junior girls Division II basketball title, and Marymount won the senior girl's Division II championship.

As always, great job ladies and gentlemen! You have done Sudbury proud with your hard-earned victories and dedicated efforts.

Hats off to Mitchell Nyssen and Natalie Lefrancois for being named the High School Athletes of the Week.

Nyssen, a Grade 9 student at Lively District Secondary School, has been a major contributor to three sports teams.

He starred on the junior boys volleyball team as its only setter. He competed for the boys junior soccer squad, helping them make it to the quarter-finals of the city championships. Nyssen is also currently on the junior boys basketball team.

A hard worker who's dedicated to learning as many new skills as possible, Nyssen is a shining example of a true student athlete with his
sportsmanship and competitive spirit.

Lefrancois is a Grade 12 student at ES du Sacre-Coeur.

A tremendous leader on and off the court, Lefrancois is a top player on the school's senior girls basketball and volleyball teams.

Lefrancois combines leadership and athletic skills with steadfast dedication and a strong work ethic, making her a remarkable student athlete.

Lefrancois is captain of both teams, and is an inspiration to all her teammates.
