Skills, Culture and Confidence was the theme for the First Annual Aboriginal Girlz Hockey Camp held in Atikmeksheng Anishnawbek, July 18-20 of this year in support of young Aboriginal girls in the game of hockey.

The camp consisted of 11 campers between the ages of 10 and 15, learning about women and hockey, culture and hockey and health and hockey.

From dryland training, on-ice training and in sharing circles with elders, the girls had access to resources that would help them become proud Anishnabe kwe, in a healthy and respectful environment.

The girls listened to insights shared by Serene Porter from Six Nations, who talked about goal setting, and Elder Julie Ozawagosh from Atikmeksheng Anishnawbek, who talked about self respect.

In balancing the teachings of roles as men and women, two men also shared their expertise and knowledge as on-ice instructors.
