Laurentian University Athletics named
Cassandra Carpenter the female athlete of the week and Ryan
Smith as the male athlete of the week.
Ryan Smith dominated the pool-scene for the
Aqua Vees this weekend, swimming to a pair of Ontario
University Athletics Championships gold medals and two
fourth-place finishes.
Smith's first gold medal came in the
400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:29:92. His second
came in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:06:07.
Smith's performance has earned him a spot in the CIS (Canadian
Interuniversity Sport) Championships at Laval University, in
Ste-Foy, Quebec, Feb. 24 to 26.
With both wins, Smith is the recipient of the
Jeno Tihanyi award for the best overall individual medley
points total.
Smith's weekend concluded with a couple of
fourth place finishes in the 200-meter butterfly, with a time
of 2:07:17, and the 200-meter backstroke with a time of
2:05:94.
Carpenter hammered the competition last
weekend, scoring 30 points in each of the Lady Vees' home
games.
Last Friday, Carpenter broke the
single-season scoring record, set at 430 points last year by
Brock's Jody Ebeling. Carpenter has 485 under her belt with one
regular season game remaining.
Her streak continued Saturday when Carpenter
passed alumni Tierney Hoo, for total career points as a Lady
Vee. Carpenter has 1,245 points in her three-year career with
the team, ranking her fifth overall in Ontario university
competition and around 100 points shy of Laurier's Meaghan
McGrath's record of 1,369.
The Lady Vees were in action Wednesday night,
losing to York University 56 to 43. Carpenter registered 14
points in the loss.
The women's first playoff game goes Saturday
Feb. 18, at 7 pm. The Vees will face either Ryerson or Ottawa
in the Ben Avery gym.
