Laurentian golfer John Atherton has missed the cut for the match play portion at the US Amateur Golf Championship. The native of Toronto, Ont. finished the stroke play portion of the event tied-for-185th.
Atherton started his day with an early morning tee time at Pinehurst number two's tenth hole, opening round with a bogey on the monster 607-yard par-five hole. The Sports Administration major was then able to string together three straight pars before registering three bogeys on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. He closed out his first nine of his second round with his only birdie of the day on the 18th hole, finishing with a nine hole score of three-over-par 38.
After the turn, Atherton bogeyed both first and second hole before registering two consecutive pars. He then had his biggest struggle of the day, registering a triple bogey on the  fifth hole. Atherton was able to recover, registering par on the remaining four holes, to shoot a five-over-par 40 on his second nine of the day.
Atherton recorded one birdie, 10 pars, six bogey's and one triple bogey to shoot a round of eight-over-par 78, bringing his two round total to 10-over-par 150, which was good enough for a tie-for-185th overall. Unfortunately, this was not good enough for Atherton to move on into the match play portion of the event.
