Jason Simons scored the most important goal in Cambrian soccer history Friday night, in his first game as a Shield footballer.

Coming into the Sept. 11 match against the second-ranked College in the country — Algonquin College — Cambrian men's coach Giuseppe Politi set two goals for his team.

First, score a goal, or “don't lay an egg at home,” as he put it.

Second, don't let the Algonquin Thunder score more than three goals.
When the final whistle blew, Algonquin hadn't scored any. David stunned Goliath in front of a rowdy Cambrian crowd.

In the second half, when 17-year-old Simons headed home a perfectly-weighted through ball from captain Arthur Vaies, the pitch erupted in celebration. The bench jumped up, screaming; the fans jumped up, screaming. It was pandemonium for everyone except Simons himself, and Algonquin's keeper.

Both players stayed down from a heavy collision resulting from the fearless sacrifice from the young Bermudan to jump up, over and through traffic to get a head on the ball.

Simons did not finish the rest of the game and the extent of the injury is not known at this time, but his mark was made.

The game ended in a 1-0 victory, over a team that has embarrassed the Cambrian side by up to six goals in the past.

Cambrian keeper Cody Welsh was a wall in the net, diving and reeling to get his hands on every strike that Algonquin had up their sleeve, including some dangerous free kicks.

Welsh also had to endure some six-yard-box mayhem and make some crucial close-range saves.

After the game, Politi had one message for his players, as he paced back and forth in front of them, “Do you see what happens when you buy into my system, when you play my system?”

The Cambrian men will look to win another three points in front of their hometown fans tonight (Sept. 12) at 7 p.m. when La Cite College visits from Ottawa.

In the woman's match-up Friday night, the Cambrian team fell to the Algonquin Thunder, 3-1. Lindsay Moore was the sole goal-scorer for the team.

The women take on La Cite at 5 p.m., before the men's game. Both games will be played on the soccer field at Cambrian's Barrydowne campus.
