Sudbury will be home to thousands of athletes from across Ontario over a four-day period in 2010.

On Aug. 12, members of the 2010 Ontario Summer Games Organizing Committee provided city council with an update on the progress of the games, which will take place from Aug. 10 to 13 next year.

Council learned the games will involve 12 volunteer committees, 23 provincial sport organizations, more than 1,000 volunteers, 3,000 participants and 600 coaches, managers and officials.

The games have a budget of $1.3 million.

The Ministry of Health's Sport Alliance Host grant has pledged $620,000, the city has put in $250,000, registrations will account for $200,000 and sponsorship will amount for the remaining $200,000.

The major costs of the tournament are accommodation and food services, which is estimated to cost $500,000, transportation and other logistics are estimated to cost $200,000, administration $125,000, marketing $150,000 and finally, $80,000 will be shelled out for equipment, venues and officials.

Venues across the city, including high schools, Cambrian College, Laurentian University and several venues in outlying areas, like Naughton, will play host to various competitions.

The games will see competition in 32 events, from archery to volleyball.

When Ottawa held the Summer Games in 2006, there was an economic impact of roughly $1.2 million. The city held it again in 2008, and the estimated impact was $1.4 million.

The summer games have an office located at Minnow Lake Place (1127 Barrydowne Dr.), and the games co-ordinator, Mark Vainio, can be reached at 674-4455 ext. 4003 for more information.

The official website for the games is 2010ontariosummergames.ca
