The Greater Sudbury Cubs are back in action on home ice on Nov. 9 against the Blind River Beavers.

The local Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League squad continues to sit on top of the league with a 16-5 record, good for 32 points so far.

Thursday’s game at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex is 7:05 p.m. The match will be preceded by a special Remembrance Day ceremony, the team said in a news release.

“The entire community is welcome to attend Thursday’s game and partake in a special pre-game Remembrance Day ceremony in memory of the individuals that paid the ultimate price in defending Canada’s freedom,” the team said. “The pre-game ceremony will be performed by members and veterans from the Lockerby Legion.”

The Cubs have a busy week, with an away game in Powassan on Wednesday against the Voodoos, and another road game Saturday against the Soo Thunderbirds.

“The Cubs won two out of three road games last week, winning in extra time in Hearst 4-3 and Iroquois Falls 2-1, before dropping a 7-2 decision to the defending champion Timmins Rock on Sunday,” the team said this week.

In other Cubs news, the club has announced that 17-year-old forward Nolan Newton has signed an OHL card with the Barrie Colts.

“We are extremely pleased that Nolan worked so hard for the Cubs in order to achieve his goal of playing in the OHL” notes Cubs GM Dave Clancy. “One of our team goals is to develop players for the next level and we were honoured to work with Nolan and assist him in his pursuit of an OHL career. We wish Nolan all the best in his next step in his promising playing career.”

For his part, Newton said he will always remember his time with the Cubs fondly.

“My time with the Cubs is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Newton said. “The Cubs coaching staff helped me develop and get to the next level. They have built a culture like no other and I am truly thankful

for everything that the Sudbury Cubs have done for me and my career.”

The Overtime Sports Bar and Grill Play of the Week for this week is co-captain Oliver Smith.

“Smith, 20, led the Cubs to two wins in three road games last week as the local star forward recorded two goals and four assists for six points, including the overtime winner in Hearst with just 27 seconds left on the clock,” the team said. “Smith, leads the Cubs in scoring with 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points in 21 games played. The 6-1, 200-lbs left winger was selected in the ninth round of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection draft by the OHL Barrie Colts and played 64 games in a Colts uniform.”
