The Greater Sudbury Cubs scored three times in the second period as they defeated the Espanola Paper Kings 4-1 at the Espanola Community Centre on Friday night.

The loss allows the Cubs, who beat the Paper Kings 4-3 in overtime on Thursday, a sweep of the home-and-home series this week.

Oliver Smith had one goal and one assist for the Cubs.

Paper Kings opened the scoring as Kyle Den Ouden, who was upended at the left faceoff circle in the Cubs zone, recovered just in time to take a feed from Lucas Signoretti, who intercepted a pass, walked in and fed Den Ouden through the slot, and he beat Cubs goalie Noah Beaulne, which made it 1-0 at 15:06.

The Cubs got the equalizer as Brady Bouchard shovelled a rebound on a two-on-one as he converted on the original shot by Mateo Signoretti at 6:17, which made it 1-1.

Less than two minutes after that, Oliver Smith found a streaking Hudson Martin in the neutral zone and he walked in and ripped a shot over Paper Kings starter Jake Marois, which made it 2-1 Cubs at 8:09.

Late in the period, it was Smith netting his league-leading 37th with two seconds left in the period to give the Cubs the 3-1 lead after two.

Cameron Shanks added some more insurance for the Cubs, as he scored a shorthanded tally on Marois which made it 4-1.

With the road win, the Cubs improve to 36-9-1-1 while the Paper Kings drop to 27-18-1-0.

The Cubs’ next game is Feb. 15 against the French River Rapids at home at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
