Northeastern Ontario's best cyclists will converge in Sudbury this weekend to race for top honours in the 2008 Northeastern Ontario Regional Championships.

Hosted by the Sudbury Cycling Club, the two-stage race will start with Time Trials on Saturday and the Criterion on Sunday.

"This is a great event for cyclists and spectators, alike," said SCC President, Guy Zito in a release. "We have a great course established in Val Caron for the Time Trial on Saturday and of course, Delki Dozzi Park is a superb racing facility for hosting the Criterion on Sunday."

The 10-km and 20-km Time Trial events will be staged at Valleyview Public School located at 1840 Valleyview Road. The first event will start at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. In the Time Trial, the cyclist is racing individually, against the clock. The riders' final time will affect their standings in the General Classification (GC).

The Criterion begins at 11 a.m Sunday morning. The "Crits" are group races around the City's one-km cycling track in Gatchell, which was established through the efforts of Delki Dozzi. Named in his honour, the track is one of few in the province and is a challenging course.

"We can expect a real battle for first place in the GC," said the Club's Head Coach, Battista Muredda in a release. "Many of our riders are just coming off of very successful seasons so they are in top form for this event.

"The public will see some exciting racing, as riders such as Mike Sepa, who won the Niagara Classic, Jason Henrie, who finished third for the season in the Ontario Cup standings and James Larmer, who finished second at the Provincial Championships, battle for the honour of the Northeastern Ontario Regional Champion."

Formed in 1974, the SCC has had a rich and successful history. Local riders, Gary Trevisiol, David Spears and Eric Wohlberg launched their Olympic and professional careers with the SCC. Other SCC riders have raced in Europe, and won the Provincial and National Championships. Past president Bill Narasnek holds the Guinness Book of World Records Trans Canada Time Trial with a time of just over 13 days, 6 hours and 6 minutes.
