Lights, camera, action! A little taste of Hollywood full of red carpet glamour, will take over the Garson Arena Dec. 12 as the Nickel Blades Skating Club presents a "Matinee at the Movies" skating show.

From the Pre-Can skaters to the club's senior skaters, approximately 150 kids aged three to 15 will take to the ice. With "Matinee at the Movies" as the show's theme, the skaters will be performing to a variety of songs from the movies, including Footloose and Alvin and the Chipmunks for the younger skaters.

The Garson Arena will be filled with Hollywood décor, complete with a film reel of head shots of the skaters displayed around the arena, to movie ushers ripping tickets as the guests arrive.

"My goal was to make them feel like stars," said Joanne Kasaboski, vice-president of the Nickel Blades Skating Club and chair of the skating show.

While the skating club has annual shows, this will be the first major production that will showcase the skaters talents complete with elaborate costumes and spotlights.

"They're very excited," said Kasaboski. "They've been practicing really hard for it." Kasaboski noted the skaters have been putting their own personal touches into the routines.

Preparations for the event began in September from the efforts of the volunteers, and the skaters have been practicing since the beginning of November.

Nickel Blades Skating Club president Noreen Nichol said she would really like to see a lot of people come out and support the skaters as well as bring awareness to the community that there is a skating club in the Garson-Coniston area.

Nichol said she hopes this event will also encourage young kids to give skating a try, as they offer a Can-Skate program which teaches kids the fundamentals of skating.

Special guest skaters at the event will be former Nickel Blades skaters Jason Perdue and Alyssa Murray, who currently skate out of the Sudbury Skating Club.

"Matinee at the Movies" will be held Friday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Garson Arena. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Children under five receive free admission.
